April 9, 1932 – April 13, 2025
Gustav Steberl went to be with Jesus in heaven on Palm Sunday, just days after his 93rd birthday, at Fraser Lodge in Hope, British Columbia. Gus lived a full and faithful life marked by ingenuity, devotion, and firm convictions.
Born to Rosina and Gustav Steberl on their family farm in Rhein, Saskatchewan. When he was only 14 months old his father met a tragic death, published as the “Yorkton hammer murder”. This left Gus to be raised by his mother who received help from the Weinmaster and Mengering families in Rhein. At 25 years old Gus met the love of his life Dorothy Weber and they were married in 1959. They shared 66 years together building a relationship and family anchored in love and faith.
In 1960, he became a born-again Christian, a decision that would shape the rest of his life. He served faithfully in his church community as a layperson, putting his unique skills to use. He made a hobby of recording sounds and sights using his audio equipment and various cameras. If you ever visited with him it wouldn’t be long and you’d be featured in one of his home movies. He loved to spend time at Echo Lake Bible Camp where he’d be wiring speakers and the PA system.
As a young man he was fascinated with fast and powerful cars, mainly Chrysler, he had many in his lifetime. One of his favorites was his ‘53 DeSoto with Hemi motor. Gus thrilled his friends by racing other cars and climbing steep hills.
Mechanically minded and self-taught, Gus had a gift for fixing almost anything. He worked on engines, electronics, and even made his own air conditioner to cool the house while watering the lawn. His creative mind led him to invent and patent an oil pressure switch, which he once pitched to the Ford Motor Company. A skilled electrician without formal training, Gus’s hands were rarely still.
Though his preferred profession was in the grocery business—working many years with Westfair Foods—his career was cut short in 1981 due to illness, which left him disabled and retired. Yet even in adversity Gus remained thankful and resilient. In recovery he found new joy in home videos, movie projectors, and spending time with his grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. Gus thanked God for a good life and many years to see his children and grandchildren grow.
Those who knew Gus remember him as a man who led by quiet example, with a calm demeanor and a heart for God. His life was truly remarkable—not because of fame or fortune—but because of the lasting impact he had on his family, his church, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. God’s hand was evident in his story and his legacy will continue for generations to come.
He is survived by:
